The Children’s Place has long been transitioning to rely more heavily on online sales. They have recently announced they plan to close one-third of their stores by the end of the fiscal year 2021.
In a statement released by the chain, President and Chief Executive Officer Jane Elfers emphasized their move to digital sales. She stated, “We are significantly accelerating our fleet optimization initiative and focusing our resources on accelerating our digital sales, both key elements of our long-standing transformation strategy,”
The release noted that they will close 200 Children’s Place retail stores this year. An additional 100 will close in 2021. These 300 stores represent about one-third of their overall storefronts.
The closures will take place in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. At this time, the exact store locations have not been made public.
The ongoing transformation paid off during the coronavirus shutdown.
Prior investments into their digital storefront allowed the company ” to operate at a high level during the current crisis, with the ability to fulfill our outsized online demand through our advanced omnichannel capabilities,” Elfers said.
