As countless retail businesses across the country are being forced to lay off employees and shut down locations, Dick’s Sporting Goods is finding themselves in a very different position.
In fact, COVID-19 hasn’t appeared to slow business down very much at all at the popular sporting goods retail store, as they’re actually planning on opening up 11 new locations by the end of August.
Because the global pandemic has discouraged people from doing indoor activities and people feel the safest outside, it’s no surprise Dick’s is benefiting from this shifting focus onto outdoor activities.
While close to 6,000 different retail stores are shutting their doors permanently across the United States thanks to our dire economic situation, Dick’s is finding themselves able to expand.
The company is opening up four traditional Dick’s Sporting Goods stores in Hyannis, Massachusetts; Brockton, Massachusetts; Deptford, New Jersey and Midland, Texas.
They are also opening up one Dick’s Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy Store in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as four Dick’s Sporting Goods Warehouse Sale locations and one Overtime store.
Both the Warehouse and the Overtime locations are new ideas for the company, as the Overtime stores will look to sell sports apparel and equipment up to 75% off. Meanwhile, the Warehouse location will be a temporary store with better discounts.
All these new Dick’s Sporting Goods locations will be hosting ribbon-cutting ceremonies on the day of their grand openings.
Despite their sales falling about 29.5% in the first quarter of this year, Dick’s found their e-commerce sales have grown a lot since the global pandemic hit the United States back in March.
In fact, they reported their online sales grew 110% in the quarter thanks to pickup services. When the physical stores themselves were closed, people across the country were still able to pick up things that helped make their quarantine a little bit better.
As big events continue to get canceled or postponed, families are constantly looking for ways to stay entertained this summer. Outdoor activities are looking like the go-to way to have fun while also staying safe.
Not to mention, many people are forgoing their lavish European summer vacation or trip to a major US city in order to venture to the outdoors, which means they need clothing and equipment suitable for their new activities. It’ll be interesting to see how Dick’s continues to do throughout the rest of the year, and if they’re able to continue this successful trend moving forward.
