These Retailers Are Opening New Stores in 2020

While countless retail businesses are filing for bankruptcy, shutting doors, and focusing on e-commerce, there are a select few that are opening new stores.

There’s no question that living through a global pandemic has been rough on the retail industry, but some companies have been able to thrive thanks to people’s change in behavior.

For example, because people have been working from home, companies like Lululemon and Athleta — which exclusively sell sweats and loungewear — have done very well.

And, as people have decided to spend more time outside, Dick’s Sporting Goods has also found themselves making money in 2020.

Though it’s hard to find a silver lining this year, it’s nice to know not every company is shutting down for good.

Read on to learn about the retailers that are opening new stores, according to Business Insider.

American Eagle Outfitters

American Eagle is planning to open 25 Aerie stores this year, which is their lifestyle brand.

They’re also planning to open two locations for their new brand, Offline.

The addition of new Aerie stores makes sense, especially considering their primarily sell loungewear. However, a number of American Eagle stores are planning to close.

Ross Stores

About 66 new Ross locations will be opening up by the end of the year.

The company originally revealed they’d be opening 100 new stores at the beginning of 2020, but they’ve probably changed that number due to COVID-19.

Five Below

Five Below has opened 84 new stores this year. They are planning to end 2020 with about 110 new locations across various cities.

Burlington Coat Factory

While Burlington is planning to open 62 new stores, they are also planning on closing/relocating 26 stores.

Aldi Grocery Stores

The discount grocery chain will be opening 70 new stores by the end of 2020.

Gap Inc.

Though Gap Inc. is planning on closing a number of Gap and Banana Republic locations because they’ve been underperforming, they are opening new Old Navy stores.

Gap Inc. is also planning on opening up new Athleta locations. As previously mentioned, the store has been doing well during the pandemic, all things considered.

Ikea

Ikea is planning to open about 50 smaller stores around the world this year.

They’re focusing their new format in cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Tractor Supply

Tractor Supply has planned to open between 75 to 80 new stores in 2020.

By June 27 they had opened 18 new locations, so it’s unclear if they’ll be able to reach 75 in the next three months.
