TikTok Partners With Shopify to Advertise Products


2020 has been a big year for social media powerhouse TikTok, but it looks like it’s only getting bigger.

While the site is clearly best known for its viral dance videos and hilarious pranks, it is beginning to expand its reach.

The popular service, owned by ByteDance, has partnered with e-commerce platform Shopify to allow merchants to launch “shoppable video ads” directly to TikTok feeds.

Read on to learn a little bit more about Shopify and how these ads will work.

What is Shopify?

For those who don’t already know, Shopify is an e-commerce platform that lets anybody set up an online store and sell their products.

Whether you’re a jewelry designer or you make ebooks, you can create a Shopify store and make money off of your work.

How Does This Work?

Shopify merchants will be able to use the new TikTok sales and marketing channels to select which products they want to feature.

Merchants then will be able to make videos “in minutes,” which customers will be able to shop right on their feed.

TikTok made this announcement on Tuesday, October 27 in a press release.

“Today, we’re announcing a global partnership with Shopify that will help more than 1 million merchants create and run campaigns directly geared toward TikTok’s highly engaged community,” they wrote.

“Brands are an important part of the TikTok experience, and we’ve seen that our community loves connecting with the brands they’re passionate about.”

They continued, “In a recent study, 88% of TikTok users said that they discover new content that they enjoy while using the app, and about half of users said they discover new products through advertisements posted by a product or brand.”

Target Audiences

Much like other advertisements, Shopify merchants will be able to target specific audiences and track ad performances.

“We’re thrilled to be the first partner to welcome TikTok to the world of commerce, particularly right now, as our merchants prepare for a busy online holiday shopping season,” Satish Kanwar, vice president of product at Shopify, shared.

“TikTok is one of the world’s fastest growing entertainment platforms with over 100 million highly engaged users in the US alone. The TikTok channel means Shopify merchants — even those without a strong TikTok following of their own yet — can connect with these new audiences.”

To get started, Shopify merchants are being offered a $300 ad credit to get started with their first TikTok campaign videos. Keep an eye out for these ads in the coming weeks!
